The Sugar Show – Stevia with Dr. Ibrahim and co-host Dr. Peldyak
Stevia highlighted in The Sugar Show
Stevia has taken the sweetening world by storm. It’s in nearly everything, or will be. Although it’s a natural sweetener, coming from the Stevia plant, stevia in the USA comes from just one part of the plant. You’ll notice it on packages as Reb A or Ribana, deemed GRAS by the FDA. Learn how, only in the USA do we pull apart a magical plant, and disallow the whole leaf to be sold as a sweetening agent. You may want to refer to the diagram when listening to the show, Dr. Ibrahim knows his biochem.
Words to know: Steviaside, Ribaudioside A, and Steviol glycosides
Acceptable daily intake is only 4mg per kilogram of body weight. Listen in for some surprises too.
