Functional Confectionery The Sugar Show

Functional confectionery is the topic on today’s episode of Cross Link Radio. Shirley talks about why you’d want to make candies with functional bits as well as explains what the functional bits are. Some examples of functional confectionery available today are chewable vitamins for kids, chews for women to deliver calcium, vitamin C lozenges, and others. How they make them and the differences between these and those are highlighted as Shirley reviews the White Paper from her subscription to Confectionery News.

Shirley Gutkowski, RDH, BSDH practiced clinical dental hygiene in and around Madison, WI from 1986 to 2003 when she focused her energy on writing and speaking. In 2013 she again picked up her scalers and has a clinical position that accommodates her dynamic schedule.

After graduating from Marquette University in 1999 she became very active in e-mail communities online and honed her communication skills to bring new and exciting information to the thousands of dentists and dental hygienists in those groups.  This evolved into feature articles and a monthly column in RDH magazine.  In an effort to reach the public with her messages and cross over into writing for consumer publications, she wrote a series of articles on oral care for Diabetes Self-Management.  This effort won her the prestigious APEX Award for writing excellence.

Today she has co-authored a best-selling book, The Purple Guide: Developing Your Clinical Dental Hygiene Career. She has written chapters on sealants, and temporary fillings in the textbook Essentials of Dental Hygiene. And contributed to chapters in the 2012 Essentials of Preventive Dentistry.

Clinical practice has taken a back seat to speaking across the country and internationally as far away as Germany and Australia on minimal intervention dental hygiene through her business Cross Link Presentations. Her newest endeavor is Cross Link Radio, a program geared towards health from the perspective of dentistry. The program is available every morning at 7 AM Central time at BlogTalkRadio.

Shirley is the 2008 Alumna of the Year Marquette University School of Health Science in Dental Hygiene, a recipient of the Leadership Award from the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry, and held the post of president in the 2006 – 2007 term of the Wisconsin Dental Hygienists’ Association.

Shirley is the technology coach at CareerFusion career development for healthcare providers with Beth Thompson.  CAREERfusion is in the opportunity business, bringing clinicians, industry partners and trade publications together.
